CH Berres Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Goldcap 2005 375ml
Golden yellow in colour, it had an absolutely fantastic nose, smelling for all the world like an elixir of liquified pineapples and dried mangoes spiked with a liberal dose of petroleum and some chemically bubble-soap scent. With time, the petrol / chemical notes fade away slightly, and the bouquet opens up with savoury earth and spice accents. Heavenly stuff. As expected, the palate was thick, rich and viscous - again, the word elixir came to mind as it unfolded in layers of pineapple candy, a blast of dried apricots, dried guava and savoury plums... just incredible fruit here - super rich, miles deep and as many miles wide in terms of breadth of flavour. Yet for all that, the wine always showed a special balance in the way only German Rieslings seem to have, keeping on its toes all the way from the power-packed attack into the sweetly lingering finish Finish, lingering sweetness. 97 points rated by Wine Spectator
